UCLA LPPI Statement on Dr. Julio Frenk Appointment as New Chancellor
LOS ANGELES – On June 12th, the University of California regents selected Dr. Julio Frenk as the 7th Chancellor of UCLA, the first Latino to lead the university.
Statement from Dr. Amada Armenta, Associate Faculty Director of the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute:
“We congratulate Dr. Julio Frenk on his appointment as Chancellor of UCLA, the nation’s No. 1–ranked public university. An esteemed academic and trailblazer in higher education, Dr. Frenk has a long track record of advocating for the health, education, and well-being of people around the world.
“Coming from the University of Miami, which is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Dr. Frenk’s appointment is a significant milestone. With UCLA’s Latino student population at 22.2% as of fall 2022, we are on the cusp of reaching the 25% threshold required for federal designation as an HSI. The appointment of Dr. Julio Frenk, a leader with a deep understanding of the Latino community, is a significant step towards this goal. His leadership holds immense potential for increasing representation and belonging at UCLA, strengthening our commitment to supporting all students, faculty, and university staff.
“We look forward to collaborating with Dr. Frenk as we jointly strive to create an inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to excel.”
